The Winnowing Winds • 60 Ayahs

وَٱلذَّٰرِيَـٰتِ ذَرْوًا

Waththariyati tharwa

By the [winds] scattering [dust], dispersing [it]

فَٱلْحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ وِقْرًا

Falhamilati wiqra

And the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]

فَٱلْجَـٰرِيَـٰتِ يُسْرًا

Faljariyati yusra

And the ships sailing with ease

فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَـٰتِ أَمْرًا

Falmuqassimati amra

And the [angels] apportioning [each] matter,

إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٌ

Innama tooAAadoona lasadiq

Indeed, what you are promised is true.

وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٌ

Wa-inna addeena lawaqiAA

And indeed, the recompense is to occur.

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْحُبُكِ

Wassama-i thati alhubuk

By the heaven containing pathways,¹

إِنَّكُمْ لَفِى قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍ

Innakum lafee qawlin mukhtalif

Indeed, you are in differing speech.¹

يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ أُفِكَ

Yu/faku AAanhu man ofik

Deluded away from it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is he who is deluded.

قُتِلَ ٱلْخَرَّٰصُونَ

Qutila alkharrasoon

Destroyed are the misinformers¹

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ

Allatheena hum fee ghamratin sahoon

Who are within a flood [of confusion] and heedless.

يَسْـَٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ

Yas-aloona ayyana yawmu addeen

They ask, "When is the Day of Recompense?"

يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ

Yawma hum AAala annariyuftanoon

[It is] the Day they will be tormented over the Fire.

ذُوقُوا۟ فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

Thooqoo fitnatakum hatha allatheekuntum bihi tastaAAjiloon

[And will be told], "Taste your torment. This is that for which you were impatient."

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatinwaAAuyoon

Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs,

ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ

Akhitheena ma atahumrabbuhum innahum kanoo qabla thalika muhsineen

Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good.

كَانُوا۟ قَلِيلًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ

Kanoo qaleelan mina allayli mayahjaAAoon

They used to sleep but little of the night,¹

وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

Wabil-ashari humyastaghfiroon

And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness,

وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ

Wafee amwalihim haqqun lissa-iliwalmahroom

And from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.

وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ءَايَـٰتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ

Wafee al-ardi ayatunlilmooqineen

And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith]

وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

Wafee anfusikum afala tubsiroon

And in yourselves. Then will you not see?

وَفِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ

Wafee assama-i rizqukum wamatooAAadoon

And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.

فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ

Fawarabbi assama-i wal-ardiinnahu lahaqqun mithla ma annakum tantiqoon

Then by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ

Hal ataka hadeethu dayfiibraheema almukrameen

Has there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham?¹ -

إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ

Ith dakhaloo AAalayhi faqaloosalaman qala salamun qawmun munkaroon

When they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace; [you are] a people unknown."

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ

Faragha ila ahlihi fajaabiAAijlin sameen

Then he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf.

فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ

Faqarrabahu ilayhim qala alata/kuloon

And placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?"

فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ

Faawjasa minhum kheefatan qaloo latakhaf wabashsharoohu bighulamin AAaleem

And he felt from them apprehension.¹ They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy.

فَأَقْبَلَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ فِى صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ

Faaqbalati imraatuhu fee sarratin fasakkatwajhaha waqalat AAajoozun AAaqeem

And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!"

قَالُوا۟ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Qaloo kathaliki qalarabbuki innahu huwa alhakeemu alAAaleem

They said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."

۞ قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

Qala fama khatbukumayyuha almursaloon

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ

Qaloo inna orsilna ilaqawmin mujrimeen

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals¹

لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن طِينٍ

Linursila AAalayhim hijaratanmin teen

To send down upon them stones of clay,

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ

Musawwamatan AAinda rabbika lilmusrifeen

Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."

فَأَخْرَجْنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Faakhrajna man kana feehamina almu/mineen

So We brought out whoever was in them [i.e., the cities] of the believers.

فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

Fama wajadna feehaghayra baytin mina almuslimeen

And We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.¹

وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ

Watarakna feeha ayatanlillatheena yakhafoona alAAathaba al-aleem

And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

وَفِى مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ

Wafee moosa ith arsanahuila firAAawna bisultanin mubeen

And in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.¹

فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكْنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَـٰحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ

Fatawalla biruknihi waqala sahirunaw majnoon

But he turned away with his supporters and said, "A magician or a madman."

فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ

Faakhathnahu wajunoodahufanabathnahum fee alyammi wahuwa muleem

So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.

وَفِى عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلْعَقِيمَ

Wafee AAadin ith arsalnaAAalayhimu arreeha alAAaqeem

And in ʿAad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.¹

مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَىْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ

Ma tatharu min shay-in atatAAalayhi illa jaAAalat-hu karrameem

It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.

وَفِى ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ

Wafee thamooda ith qeela lahumtamattaAAoo hatta heen

And in Thamūd, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."

فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ

FaAAataw AAan amri rabbihim faakhathat-humuassaAAiqatu wahum yanthuroon

But they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.

فَمَا ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَ

Fama istataAAoo min qiyaminwama kanoo muntasireen

And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ

Waqawma noohin min qablu innahum kanooqawman fasiqeen

And [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient.

وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

Wassamaa banaynahabi-aydin wa-inna lamoosiAAoon

And the heaven We constructed with strength,¹ and indeed, We are [its] expander.

وَٱلْأَرْضَ فَرَشْنَـٰهَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَـٰهِدُونَ

Wal-arda farashnahafaniAAma almahidoon

And the earth We have spread out, and excellent is the preparer.

وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

Wamin kulli shay-in khalaqna zawjaynilaAAallakum tathakkaroon

And of all things We created two mates [i.e., counterparts]; perhaps you will remember.

فَفِرُّوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

Fafirroo ila Allahi inneelakum minhu natheerun mubeen

So flee to Allāh.¹ Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

Wala tajAAaloo maAAa Allahi ilahanakhara innee lakum minhu natheerun mubeen

And do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ

Kathalika ma ata allatheenamin qablihim min rasoolin illa qaloo sahirunaw majnoon

Similarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman."

أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ

Atawasaw bihi bal hum qawmun taghoon

Did they suggest it to them?¹ Rather, they [themselves] are a transgressing people.

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٍ

Fatawalla AAanhum fama anta bimaloom

So leave them, [O Muḥammad], for you are not to be blamed.

وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Wathakkir fa-inna aththikratanfaAAu almu/mineen

And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

Wama khalaqtu aljinna wal-insailla liyaAAbudoon

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ

Ma oreedu minhum min rizqin wamaoreedu an yutAAimoon

I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ

Inna Allaha huwa arrazzaquthoo alquwwati almateen

Indeed, it is Allāh who is the [continual] Provider,¹ the firm possessor of strength.

فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذَنُوبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصْحَـٰبِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ

Fa-inna lillatheena thalamoothanooban mithla thanoobi as-habihimfala yastaAAjiloon

And indeed, for those who have wronged is a portion [of punishment] like the portion of their companions [i.e., predecessors], so let them not impatiently urge Me.

فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن يَوْمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ

Fawaylun lillatheena kafaroo minyawmihimu allathee yooAAadoon

And woe to those who have disbelieved from their Day which they are promised.
