البلد

The City • 20 Ayahs

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

La oqsimu bihatha albalad

I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

Waanta hillun bihatha albalad

And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ

Wawalidin wama walad

And [by] the father¹ and that which was born [of him],

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ

Laqad khalaqna al-insana feekabad

We have certainly created man into hardship.

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahad

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا

Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubada

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahad

Does he think that no one has seen him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ

Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayn

Have We not made for him two eyes?

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

Walisanan washafatayn

And a tongue and two lips?

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ

Wahadaynahu annajdayn

And have shown him the two ways?¹

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ

Fala iqtahama alAAaqaba

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.¹

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ

Wama adraka maalAAaqaba

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

Fakku raqaba

It is the freeing of a slave

أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ

Aw itAAamun fee yawmin theemasghaba

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

Yateeman tha maqraba

An orphan of near relationship

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ

Aw miskeenan tha matraba

Or a needy person in misery

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ

Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoowatawasaw bissabri watawasaw bilmarhama

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

Ola-ika as-habualmaymana

Those are the companions of the right.¹

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

Wallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatinahum as-habu almash-ama

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.¹

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ

AAalayhim narun mu/sada

Over them will be fire closed in.¹
